Far West

The Far West neighborhood is almost a city within a city. It is entirely possible to never leave the Far West district outlined in the map above—all of your needs will be amply provided for in the surrounding streets of Far West Blvd. The entertainment scene is impressive, and distinct from that surrounding the University of Texas. This North Austin neighborhood is a favorite for upperclassmen and graduate students.

Whether you are looking for movies and craft beers at Alamo Drafthouse, or first-class local-made burgers at Hopdoddy Burger Bar (please try the Parmesan Truffle Fries), or if you are looking to bowl with friends at the ritzy Goodnight Bowling alley—Far West has something for you.

In case you don’t know, Alamo Drafthouse is an Austin original movie theatre since 1997. The founders pride themselves in creating this movie experience that goes beyond the ‘multiplex theatre’. Offering craft beers, burgers, pizzas, salads, snacks, desserts using local ingredients, comfy seating, and exceptional picture and sound equipment – the Alamo has set a standard in combining food service and entertainment. And if you don’t know Alamo for their unique films and menu – surely you’ve heard about their custom preshow (no paid ads!), or their Code of Conduct that enforces no talking or texting in the theatre. They’re serious!

The Far West neighborhood offers a range of shopping, dining, and nightlife options because of its geography in the North Austin area. Cover 3 is a food favorite for the North Austin natives and if shopping is more your thing, the famous Domain shopping center is just a short drive away. The Domain is a fairly new outdoor shopping area as of 2007 and is still being expanded and updated as of late. Higher end stores such as Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, ALDO, and Anthropologie can be found here as well as the traditional Macy’s and Dillard’s. Not to mention – the many restaurants such as NoRTH Italia, Kona Grill, Crú Wine Bar, Fleming’s Steak House, St. Genevieve, Flower Child…the list goes on. You’re no longer confined to 6^th Street when looking for a youthful night out – you will be jumping for joy when you see all the happy hour food and drink specials offered here!

Another Austin-favorite for shopping is The Arboretum; featuring Amy’s Ice Cream, Francesca’s, Avant Garde Jewelry and The Cheesecake Factory. This is a great place to take pictures and hang out by the community fire place.

If you’re fit and flexy – great gym options include Anytime Fitness, LA Fitness, or Planet Fitness on Anderson Ln.

For your main grocery needs, there is an H-E-B located centrally in the Far West neighborhood, just across from The Ridge Apartments on Wood Hollow. For many undergraduates, this convenient grocery store location has been a saving grace after years of frustration after shopping at the H-E-B on 38th street. Never again! Another part about this H-E-B is it offers a Kosher Store serving kosher fare, and includes many kosher items in the regular shopping area – as it caters to the surrounding Jewish community. The Shalom Austin JCC is just half a mile away along with multiple synagogues. And if you’re in a rush, this location offers curbside pick-up!
