Far West

Cozy neighborhood minutes from UT and Downtown

The area colloquially referred to as “Far West” is the most densely populated area of the Austin neighborhood known as Northwest Hills. Despite what the name might imply, the area is actually not located that far or that west. Far West is located just five miles North of the University of Texas at Austin, just West of Mopac, South of 183, and North of 2222. All of the residential areas in Far West have a UT shuttle that picks up and drops off right in front of all the major complexes. It is roughly a 20-minute ride with average traffic, and as high as 30-45 minutes with heavy traffic.

On the other side of Mopac and West of the US Hwy 183 junction at Lamar, you can find W Anderson Lane. This street isn’t long but it packs a punch as far as restaurants, entertainment, and shopping.

Far West is a great location for upperclassmen, graduate students, faculty, professionals working at one of the many tech companies in the area. The rolling landscape of Far West changes gradually from office buildings to restaurants to shopping centers to expensive family homes. Because of the slight distance from campus, Far West is one of the more affordable places to rent for UT Students.

What to Expect

Far West is significantly more affordable than West Campus, North Campus, and Hyde Park. If you are looking to live in a studio or a 1-bedroom apartment—you will get the most bank for your buck in the Far West area. Unlike many places in right next to campus, these apartments are about 700 sq. feet and often come with upgraded appliances, free parking, and a washer/dryer in the unit. As opposed to smaller living spaces, paying extra for parking, no upgraded appliances, and having only laundry facilities on-site. If you don’t mind a minimal commute and your budget isn’t flexible, this is a great spot to live.

If you are a recent graduate who will be working at the North Austin Apple campus, or if you are an Austin resident who working in Wells Branch, Round Rock, or North Austin, you also can’t beat the convenient location of the Far West neighborhood.

1-bedrooms can be found for as low as $900/month and 2-bedrooms start at about $1100/month, or $550 per bedroom. Unlike the other neighborhoods, 6-month leases are usually available at little-to-no additional monthly charge. Pet restrictions are minimal.

The Lifestyle

The Far West neighborhood is almost a city within a city. It is entirely possible to never leave the Far West district outlined in the map above—all of your needs will be amply provided for in the surrounding streets of Far West Blvd. The entertainment scene is impressive, and distinct from that surrounding the University of Texas. This North Austin neighborhood is a favorite for upperclassmen and graduate students.

Whether you are looking for movies and craft beers at Alamo Drafthouse, or first-class local-made burgers at Hopdoddy Burger Bar (please try the Parmesan Truffle Fries), or if you are looking to bowl with friends at the ritzy Goodnight Bowling alley—Far West has something for you.

In case you don’t know, Alamo Drafthouse is an Austin original movie theatre since 1997. The founders pride themselves in creating this movie experience that goes beyond the ‘multiplex theatre’. Offering craft beers, burgers, pizzas, salads, snacks, desserts using local ingredients, comfy seating, and exceptional picture and sound equipment – the Alamo has set a standard in combining food service and entertainment. And if you don’t know Alamo for their unique films and menu – surely you’ve heard about their custom preshow (no paid ads!), or their Code of Conduct that enforces no talking or texting in the theatre. They’re serious!

The Far West neighborhood offers a range of shopping, dining, and nightlife options because of its geography in the North Austin area. Cover 3 is a food favorite for the North Austin natives and if shopping is more your thing, the famous Domain shopping center is just a short drive away. The Domain is a fairly new outdoor shopping area as of 2007 and is still being expanded and updated as of late. Higher end stores such as Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, ALDO, and Anthropologie can be found here as well as the traditional Macy’s and Dillard’s. Not to mention – the many restaurants such as NoRTH Italia, Kona Grill, Crú Wine Bar, Fleming’s Steak House, St. Genevieve, Flower Child…the list goes on. You’re no longer confined to 6th Street when looking for a youthful night out – you will be jumping for joy when you see all the happy hour food and drink specials offered here!

Another Austin-favorite for shopping is The Arboretum; featuring Amy’s Ice Cream, Francesca’s, Avant Garde Jewelry and The Cheesecake Factory. This is a great place to take pictures and hang out by the community fire place.

If you’re fit and flexy – great gym options include Anytime Fitness, LA Fitness, or Planet Fitness on Anderson Ln.

For your main grocery needs, there is an H-E-B located centrally in the Far West neighborhood, just across from The Ridge Apartments on Wood Hollow. For many undergraduates, this convenient grocery store location has been a saving grace after years of frustration after shopping at the H-E-B on 38th street. Never again! Another part about this H-E-B is it offers a Kosher Store serving kosher fare, and includes many kosher items in the regular shopping area – as it caters to the surrounding Jewish community. The Shalom Austin JCC is just half a mile away along with multiple synagogues. And if you’re in a rush, this location offers curbside pick-up!

Remember that the UT Shuttle picks up right outside most apartment complexes in the neighborhood. – see transportation information above. Affordability and luxury in Far West is just a phone call away!
